A House Divided
America, we need to talk. We tried, we really did. There is no kidding ourselves. This isn't working out. If the reaction to the murder of Charlie Kirk has taught us anything, it's that our differences are to wide and deep to mend. We have to decide if we want a civil war or we want to live in peace. The incident has underscored the widening chasm between varied political ideologies in the United States, shedding light on the discontent that many Americans feel towards each other. Are we on the verge of something akin to a civil war, or is the concept of a national divorce merely a symptom of our current sociopolitical climate?
The road to peace is paved with understanding the reality. The reality to understand is that we hate each other with a passion. There's no love here. No respect and nothing left to build upon.
in 1858, Abraham Lincoln accepted the Illinois nomination as candidate for US senator. He gave the famour "House Divided Speech", in which he proclaimed "I do not expect the Union to be dissolved – I do not expect the house to fall – but I do expect it will cease to be divided.
It will become all one thing or all the other."
Unfortunately, today we are not face with on single issue or ploicy that divides us. in 1858 it was either slavery or no slavery. Today the issues are many and the differences in world view are not based on georaphy, but perception of what is right and just.
FASCISM OR NO?
The reaction from the right spwaned a wave of social media posts citing "anti-fascism" as a major factor in the shooter's character, EVEN after it was revealed that he came from a right wing, MAGA family. In millions of posts on social media phrases like "anti-fascism ideology killed him" demonstrate one of the biggest hurdles to civility in politics.
In these is the clear and obvious position that being anti-fascist is bad and wrong. Every decent person I know was raised anti-fascist. Anti-fascism is the reason we fought WWII. The Republican party, the MAGA movement is openly and brazenly PRO-FASCISM!
Fascism is not something that leaves room for compromise. One must wholly accept ot reject fascism. There's no such thing as fascism-lite.
Irreconcilable Differences
Let's be honest. We hate each other and almost everything the other values. Most of the 249 year experiment felt promising and hopeful, but even with trial separation that saw 650,000 dead, and more assassinations than I can keep track of, we still have not figured out how to tolerate each other.
The choice is clear, we split up or will kill each other in a desperate attempt to impose our will.
Imposing Beliefs
Vietnam has been a major ingregient in shaping my world view. One of the most interesting things about that conflict is, despite the peaceful and forgiving culture, they had to kill millions of family, neighbors, and countrymen before they were able to find diplomatic solutions to having diametrically opposing beliefs about government.
The Vietnam war was a failed attempt to force ideology upon people. The few million people that died while they figured that out were incentive enough to find a away to talk it over. I don't think America will care if we kill each other in numbers less than one hundred million.
Finding Common Ground: Is It Still Possible?
Despite the overwhelming divide, is there still room for healing and unity within America? While the voices like mine clamoring for separation seem to grow louder, many citizens long for bipartisanship and mutual respect. Understanding and dialogue are essential in bridging the chasm that threatens to consume us.
One possible avenue towards reconciliation lies in grassroots movements that prioritize community engagement over party lines. Local initiatives focusing on collaborative problem-solving can shift narratives away from conflict and toward cooperation. Additionally, fostering critical thinking skills and encouraging open discussions in educational settings can equip future generations with tools to navigate political disagreements without resorting to violence or division.
As we witness the turmoil surrounding figures like Trump and threats of violence from radical groups, it's crucial to remember that most Americans desire a sense of belonging and shared purpose. Breakthroughs towards unity would require acknowledging and respecting varying opinions while advocating for civil discourse. Unfortunately, we have already surrendered so much to a ruling class that ignores the desire for stability and peace.
While the mechanisms of national divorce are extremely complicated due to the nature of the divide and lack of geographical boundaries to our disagreements, we must opt for separation over. murder.
