There’s something deeply moving about hearing a song that was written decades ago and realizing it still speaks with the same quiet power today.
Most people who know me, know the story of when I played a dying vet over the rainbow bridge. This is the song the did the trick.
For those who don't know, in the Summer of 2014 I had a gig at the VA that was supposed to be for almost 100 WWII vets in a nursing home. I got there and found just one old man. He looked asleep. I told the nurses aid at the front desk she made an announcement that entertainment was starting but they must have known it was me because nobody else came. I told the aid the guy was asleep. She said "No, he's been that way, hasn't open his eyes or spoken a word in 2 months."
I played 45 mins for a guy in a come. I was dancing and singing like a fool, Elvis, Sinatra, Johnny Cash.
After 45 mins I called the agent who booked it and said I'm playing for a guy in a coma. He said "do one more song and get out of there".
For some reason, I chose this song. I'm not very religious and have struggled with faith my whole life. When I got the the chorus, the man opened his eyes, looked at the ceiling lights, said a few words too low for me to hear, then he left this life.
I called for a nurse who verified that he was gone.
One of the most profound experiences I ever had.
